Pre-98 Bubba Kush is one of those legendary old-school cuts that I've wanted to grow for a long time. Like Original Z, she is a short, squat, and remarkably compact plant, staying considerably smaller than many of the cultivars around her. She isn't going to win any awards for towering over the garden, but what she lacks in stature she makes up for with character, potency, and one of the most distinctive aromas in the room.
The nose is where Pre-98 Bubba really separates herself. Crack open a bag and the first thing that hits you is an incredibly savory combination of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and earthy Kush funk. There's something almost dessert-like about it, but without the sweetness—you get the rich, bitter aroma of freshly brewed coffee and dark chocolate layered over that unmistakable old-school hashy earthiness. And she doesn't politely keep it to herself. The aroma wants to escape the bag, filling the surrounding area almost immediately after it's opened.
There's something particularly nostalgic about the profile. In an era dominated by candy, fruit, and artificial dessert terpenes, Pre-98 Bubba Kush smells like cannabis from another generation. It's rich, earthy, savory, and unmistakably Kush.
Her compact structure makes her an interesting plant to grow. Like Original Z, she doesn't waste much energy trying to become a giant. Instead, she stays short and stubby, packing her energy into a relatively small footprint. That makes her especially appealing when garden space is limited, although her diminutive size can make her look almost comical next to more vigorous cultivars.
The effects are every bit as classic as the aroma. Pre-98 Bubba delivers a deep, calming indica experience that settles into the body and encourages you to slow down. There's a heavy physical relaxation accompanied by a warm, tranquil headspace—the kind of effect that makes sitting down feel like the obvious next step. This isn't a cultivar I'd reach for when I need to be productive. She's made for evenings, quiet nights, and letting the day disappear.
Pre-98 Bubba Kush is ultimately a celebration of everything that made old-school Kush genetics so special. She isn't the biggest plant. She isn't the fastest plant. And she certainly isn't chasing the latest candy-fruit flavor trend.
She doesn't need to.
Give her a little room in the garden, open the bag, and let that chocolate-coffee Kush funk do the talking.
