If cannabis had a beauty contest, Granddaddy Purple would be difficult to beat.

GDP is without question the prettiest plant in my garden, and the flowers are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. As she approaches harvest, the buds develop an almost surreal silver appearance from the sheer number of trichomes covering every surface. The flowers look completely encrusted in diamonds, with the purple coloration developing underneath all that frost until the finished buds look almost unreal.

And she gets there quickly. GDP is an exceptionally fast finisher, with the plant purpling up aggressively as she approaches maturity. Watching the green disappear and those deep purple tones take over while the trichomes continue stacking is one of the most satisfying parts of growing her. She doesn't need an extended flower period to put on an incredible show.

The aroma is unmistakably grape. Fresh from the jar, there's a sweet grape-candy character that immediately brings to mind the classic grape flavor of childhood candy. But grinding the flower takes it to another level. Once the grinder opens up those resin-coated flowers, the grape aroma becomes dramatically more intense—almost exactly like opening a packet of powdered grape Kool-Aid mix. It's incredibly concentrated and instantly recognizable.

And then there's the resin.

GDP is sticky. Not slightly sticky. Not "good amount of resin" sticky. This flower can be downright annoying to handle because everything wants to stick to everything else. The buds cling to your fingers, the grinder collects a layer of resin, and once you've handled a decent amount of it, you know you've been working with some seriously trichome-heavy flower.

The effects are every bit as powerful as the appearance suggests. GDP delivers a hard-hitting, distinctly indica-style high that comes on with a strong rush directly to the forehead. There's an immediate heaviness and euphoria that settles over you quickly, making this much more of an evening cultivar than a daytime smoke for me.

What makes GDP so special is that it manages to excel in nearly every category. She finishes fast. She purples beautifully. She produces some of the most heavily frosted flowers in the garden. She smells like grape candy, becomes almost ridiculously aromatic once ground, and produces resin so sticky that you'll wonder how you're ever going to get it off your hands.

Some cultivars are grown for their effects. Some for their terpenes. Some for their bag appeal.

GDP decided to do all three—and somehow make it look effortless.
